IDEAS FESTIVAL 2009 - HIGHLIGHTS

Renegade Management was proud to be involved with the Speaker Management for the 2009 Ideas Festival. The program of events included international, national and local speakers on a broad range of topics. Housed at the lovely State Library of Queensland on Brisbane’s Southbank, the Festival presented a range of lectures, panel discussions, debates, question and answer and interview sessions along with a school's program "Think Do Tank".

Featuring international, national and local speakers, Renedage Management is proud to be appointed the Festivals Speaker Management company for 2009.

With more than 50 sessions in its main program and over 160 speakers presenting at Ideas, getting your head around what’s hot is difficult, so Renegade list the following sessions as highlights of the event this year:

THE BIG I OPENER
Opening night saw the Ideas Festival in association with QPAC present “The Big I Opener” with some of the biggest ideas from some big-name brains.

In these turbulent times everything is back on the table. In an era of Barack and bankruptcies, some new bold ideas are emerging. To welcome the national and international Festival guests, Phillip Adams (prolific and sometimes controversial broadcaster, writer and film-maker) encouraged political satirist Bryan Dawe, actor and TV presenter Ernie Dingo, UK Urban Planner, Charles Landry and Dr Carmen Lawrence (former Premier of WA) to invent and reinvent some big, bold ideas.

An entertaining, pensive, thought-provoking start to a great Festival.

INNOVATION AND INVENTION
Out of the box and outside the square was Helen Greiner’s (Technologist and Innovator) session on Innovation and Invention.

Helen is an entrepreneur and co-founder of iRobot Corp, a robot industry pioneer and the inventor of the ROOMBA® robot vacuum.

Under her leadership, iRobot has become a global leader in the research, design and manufacture of robots for the industrial, commercial, academic and military sectors. She has also made Fortune Magazine’s list of the Top 10 Innovators under 40 in the United States.

Helen talked about her love of engineering and the importance she feels to get out message that engineering is a great career for girls and women out. Her passion for invention and robots, the possibilities they have for making life easier for the elderly, for saving hundreds of lives by assisting with diffusing land mines and using them in wars for the most dangerous activities was riveting and exciting.

CONSUMERISM AND THE ENVIRONMENT
World-renowned photographer and environmental activist Chris Jordan has documented the excesses of western society with a series of startling images. He talks about this process and his journey of discovery through art.

In his stunning, eye-opening presentation, photographer Chris Jordan vividly documents the combined effects of our culture of consumption.

Every day, 426,000 cell phones are discarded. Photographer Chris Jordan heard statistics like that and wondered “what, exactly, does that mean? What does that number look like?”

His answer resulted in a unique photographic document that puts into perspective precisely how much is thrown away by otherwise responsible citizens.

Jordan’s slideshow and commentary, based on his highly lauded exhibits, takes audiences through his beautiful and elucidating photographs, documenting such issues as the environment, global warming and other social issues.

Audiences will walk from Jordan’s presentation reflecting on the complex roles we all play, and the responsibilities we all hold, in the stewardship of our planet.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Is climate change a human invention, or intervention? What is the science, and what are the repercussions?

Professor Ian Lowe (chairman of the Australian Conservation Foundation) asked climatologists Dr Graham Pearman and Professor David Karoly, and theoretical ecologist Professor Hugh Possingham. This proved to be not just a scientific gab-fest, but an entertaining, disturbing and fascinating look into climate change, who caused it and what we all can do about it.

SOFTWARE FOR THE BRAIN
Cognitive Scientist, Dr Michael Hewitt-Gleeson first coined the phrase ‘necktop personal computer’ in his best-selling book “Software for the Brain” which shows how our brain is the ultimate PC.

Dr Hewitt Gleeson presented two sold out workshops which showed participants how to use Brain Software—cvs2bvse to become better at listening, better at solving business problems, better at selling, better at creating opportunities, better at making decisions, better at handling family matters, better at dealing with personal situations, better at getting better, better at anything!

This year’s featured robotiics engineer Helen Greiner, activist and photographer Chris Jordan and satirist Bryan Dawe.
